Notable Seminole Birthday: FSU Hoops Hall of Famer Toney Douglas Turns 40
Born March 16, 1986, Florida State men’s basketball legend Toney Douglas celebrates his 40th birthday today!
Happy 40th birthday to former Florida State Seminoles Basketball All-ACC guard Toney Douglas!
After a Freshman All-American season at Auburn, Toney Douglas spent four seasons as a member of the Florida State men's basketball program from 2005 to 2009. Forced to sit out a season after transferring, Douglas was an instant impact player for the Seminoles. A volume scorer and a lockdown defense, Douglas left FSU as a 2-time All-ACC performer.
Douglas averaged nearly 13 points per game and three assists as a redshirt sophomore during the 2006-07 season. As a junior, Douglas earned third-team All-ACC and ACC All-Defensive team honors after putting up better than 15 points per game, nearly three assists and an ACC-leading 2.6 steals. His 90 steals that season is the second-highest season total in program history.
As a senior during the 2008-09 season, Douglas helped FSU reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 11 years. While shooting 45% from the field and 39% from deep, Douglas led the ACC by averaging 21.5 points per game -- the ninth-highest single-season average in FSU history -- to go with 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per contest.
Douglas was recognized as a first-team All-ACC selection and ACC Defensive Player of the Year. After helping FSU reach the ACC Championship for the first time ever and setting an FSU single-season scoring record with 751 points, Douglas garnered ACC All-Tournament team status and was named a first-team All-American by Rivals.
Selected in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, Douglas spent eight seasons in the league with the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies. Inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2021, Douglas ranks fifth all-time in career points for the Seminoles with 1,655 and eighth in made 3-pointers (178), steals (188) and free throws (357). Douglas also ranks 10th in program history in free-throw percentage (.806).
