Notable Seminole Birthday: FSU Hoops Legend Doug Edwards Turns 55

Born Jan. 21, 1971, former Florida State men’s basketball standout Doug Edwards celebrates his 55th birthday today.

A native of South Florida, Doug Edwards spent four seasons as a member of the Florida State men's basketball program. A 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward, Edwards played for the Seminoles from 1989 to 1993 and helped make their transition from the Metro Conference to the ACC a seamless one. Part of a star-studded lineup that included Bob Sura and Sam Cassell, Edwards helped make head coach Pat Kennedy's tenure one of the best in program history.

After not appearing in a game as a freshman, Edwards shot 52% from the field during the 1990-91 season while putting up 16.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. After earning second-team All-Metro honors as a sophomore, Edwards made the All-ACC second team in each of his final two seasons and helped FSU advance past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament each year.

As a junior during the 1991-92 season, Edwards averaged 17.1 points, nine rebounds and 1.4 blocks while shooting 51% from the field as the Seminoles reached the Sweet 16. Against UNC-Asheville that season, Edwards became just the third player in program history to make at least 10 field goals in a game without a miss. As a senior, he had a career-year, shooting 53% from the field while averaging 18.3 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks as FSU reached the Elite Eight for the first time in 21 years.

Selected with the No. 15 overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1993 NBA Draft, Edwards spent three years in the league with the Hawks and Vancouver Grizzlies. Inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2008, Edwards once scored in double figures in 40 straight games during his collegiate career.

His 1,604 career points rank sixth in program history. Edwards ranks fifth in FSU history in career field goals (621) and rebounds (788), 10th in blocks (121) and fourth in double-doubles (36).
