Seminole Sunday Sauce — May 25, 2025: Stellar Seasons End for FSU Women’s Golf, Softball
Two stellar seasons in Florida State women’s sports came to an end this week. Florida State women’s golf finished two wins shy of a national championship. FSU softball was swept by No. 12 Texas Tech in the Tallahassee Super Regional.
FSU women’s golf’s run ultimately came to an end on Tuesday against No. 1 Stanford, 3-1. After falling behind 2-0, FSU was forced to pull out three very close matches. Alexandra Gazzoli was able to get the Seminoles on the board with a win in a playoff hole, but Lottie Woad fell to Stanford’s Megha Ganne in 20 holes.
The Seminoles finished fourth in stroke play with Mirabel Ting leading the way with a second-place finish. Woad also placed in the top 10.
FSU then topped USC in the quarterfinals, 3-1. Ting, Woad and Kaylah Williams rolled to victories in the win over the Women of Troy. The national semifinal finish is the best ever for the program since the NCAA Championships went to the current format.
Ting was honored on Tuesday with the ANNIKA Award, which annually goes to the top college player in women’s golf. Luke Clanton was also recognized for being just that for the FSU men as he was presented with the Ben Hogan Award.
For FSU softball, it was a tough week. The fifth-seeded Seminoles, however, found a way to win their first elimination game of the postseason. After Auburn beat FSU 8-3 on Sunday to force a decisive game of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, the Seminoles advanced with a 4-0 victory.
Michaela Edenfield set the tone early with a 2-run home run in the first inning. In the circle, Ashtyn Danley and Jazzy Francik combined to hold the Tigers to just five hits. Shleby McKenzie homered in the fifth for FSU.
During the Super Regional, however, FSU had no answer for Texas Tech pitcher Nijaree Canady. No. 12 Texas Tech opened the Tallahassee Super Regional on Friday with a 3-0 victory over the Seminoles. In addition to holding FSU to just two hits, Canady homered at the plate for the Red Raiders. Alana Johnson also homered in the win.
On Friday, Texas Tech punched its ticket to the Women’s College World Series for the first time ever with a 2-1 win. Four FSU errors led to two unearned runs for Texas Tech.
The Seminoles missed multiple scoring opportunities, failing to get runners in from third base with one out in both the fifth and seventh innings. Trailing 2-0, FSU broke up the shutout in the seventh on an RBI groundout from McKenzie that also moved the tying run to third base. Hallie Wacaser and Jaysoni Beachum followed with pop-outs to end the game.
With the defeats, FSU ends the year with a record of 49-12. FSU baseball, men’s golf and track and field remain the only sports still in action for the athletic year.
