Notable Seminole Birthday: FSU Hoops Conference Player of the Year Harry Davis Turns 70
Born Jan. 27, 1956, former Florida State men’s basketball forward and Metro Conference Player of the Year Harry Davis celebrates his 70th birthday today!
A native of Cleveland, Harris Davis spent four seasons with the Florida State men's hoops program from 1974 to 1978. An undersized power forward and center at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, Davis was one of the most efficient scorers in program history. He averaged in double figures scoring over each of his final three seasons on campus.
In 26 games as a freshman, Davis averaged nine points and nearly six rebounds while shooting better than 56% from the field. As a sophomore during the 1975-76 season, Davis shot a career-best 64% from the floor -- an FSU record at the time --while averaging 12.3 points and more than six rebounds as the Seminoles finished 21-6 and nationally ranked. Davis continued to improve statistically, putting up nearly 15 points and eight boards per game as junior on 57% shooting before a monster senior season.
In his final season in Tallahassee of 1977-78, Davis earned Metro Co-Player of the Year. That season, he shot 58% from the field while averaging a career-high 19.5 points per contest to go with 7.4 rebounds per game. In what would be the final season under legendary head coach Hugh Durham, Davis helped FSU finish 23-6 and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since its national title game appearance six years prior.
Selected in the second round of the 1978 NBA Draft by his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, Davis spent two years in the league with the Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs. Inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 1998, Davis ranks 10th on FSU's all-time scoring list with 1,514 points. He ranks fourth in career field goals (640) and ninth in field goal percentage (.584).
