Notable Seminole Birthday: FSU Hoops Legend Ron King Turns 75
Born July 11, 1951, guard Ron King helped Florida State men’s basketball go further than it has even been. King celebrates his 75th birthday today!
A member of the Florida State men's basketball program for three seasons from 1970 to 1973, Ron King went on to have one of the greatest careers in program history. As a sophomore during the 1970-71 season, King averaged 22.7 points per game and broke the FSU single-game record, which still stands today, with 46 points in a rout of Georgia Southern.
While shooting better than 50% from the field, King was recognized as an honorable mention All-American before being a first-team selection as a junior as the Seminoles reached new heights, finishing as national runners-up to John Wooden and UCLA. King led all scorers with 27 points in the national championship game to earn NCAA All-Tournament team honors.
As a junior, King would average nearly 18 points per game. Unfortunately for the Louisville native, his senior season was cut short to injury as he played in just six games.
A 1988 inductee into the FSU Hall of Fame, King's No. 33 jersey was later retired. King would spend one season in the ABA as a member of the Kentucky Colonels.
King remains one of the all-time scoring leaders at FSU, ranking fourth in career scoring average (19.6 points per game). The 6-foot-4 guard still holds the FSU single-season record for made field goals (262 in 1970-71).
