Notable Seminole Birthday: Rodney Dobard, FSU Hoops’ All-time Blocks Leader Turns 55

Born April 17, 1971, Florida State men’s basketball’s all-time leader in blocks, Rodney Dobard, celebrates his 55th birthday today!

A native of Delray Beach, 6-foot-9 Rodney Dobard spent four seasons as a member of the Florida State men's basketball program from 1989 to 1993. An efficient scorer inside, Dobard was a rim protector in every sense of the word.

Dobard capped his career by helping the Seminoles advance in the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons, which included a Sweet 16 appearance in 1992 and the program's first Elite Eight appearance in 21 years in 1993.

After averaging less than three points and rebounds per game as a freshman during the 1989-90 season, Dobard transformed into a starter by his sophomore season. Dobard averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks that season.

He would go on to average in double figures in each of his final two seasons. As a junior during the 1991-92 season, Dobard averaged 11 points, nearly seven rebounds and 1.6 blocks while shooting 62.4% from the field -- the highest for an FSU player in 12 years.

As a senior, Dobard set an FSU record with 111 blocks (3.2 per game) for the season to go with averages of a career-high 11.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest while shooting better than 57% from the field for the third straight season. Dobard was recognized as an All-ACC honorable mention performer.

With 239 career blocks, Dobard has 43 more than Corey Louis, who ranks No. 2 on the list. In addition to being the all-time leader in blocks, Dobard's .585 career field goal percentage ranks eighth in program history. Since graduating from FSU, Dobard has gone on to work as a physical education teacher and a high school basketball coach.
